The final ‘International’ Road Race of 2015 took place at the infamous Dundrod road circuit from the 3rd to the 8th of August. The Ulster Grand Prix is known as the fastest road race because of its 130+ mph laps.
Lee Johnston, who only made his debut in 2012, arrived looking for his first win at the Ulster Grand Prix and went home with not one but three wins in a day. He described it as an absolute dream come true. Riding his East Coast Racing/Burdens BMW, he took to the top step of the podium in the 1000cc Superstock race along with a new lap record of 132.793mph. Peter Hickman (Briggs Equipment BMW) finished second, with Michael Dunlop (MD Racing BMW) finishing third.
Riding his East Coast Racing/Burdens Triumph 675 in the opening Supersport race, Johnston took the race win and another new lap record, beating William Dunlop by 3/100ths of a second, with Glenn Irwin (Gearlink Kawasaki) taking third. Johnston’s third win of the day, along with another fastest lap came in the second Supersport race. British Supersport Championship contender Glenn Irwin led in the early exchanges but when the race was stopped for a red flag incident, Johnston was declared the winner, with the result taken from the end of the third lap, with Irwin second and Ian Hutchinson (Team Traction Control Yamaha) third.
There was also controversy in the first Superbike race which was also red flagged because of an incident, with the win going to Bruce Anstey (Valvoline Racing by Padgetts Honda) from Ian Hutchinson (PBM Kawasaki), taking the fastest lap of the race and Lee Johnston (East Coast Racing/Burdens BMW) getting onto the podium again in third.
Peter Hickman also took his debut win at Ulster in the second Superbike encounter, after Johnston and Anstey decided to sit it out due to deteriorating conditions. Conor Cummins (Honda Racing) took a respectful second place and the fastest lap of the race with Michael Dunlop finishing third.
We are saddened to hear of the loss of Andy Lawson at this event and send our thoughts to his family and friends at this traumatic time.
